About Zebra 3
Zebra 3 is u-he's third-generation modular-style synthesizer. The Zebra line is built on a modular architecture with a fixed set of powerful modules that can be patched freely, and its positioning is deliberate: it offers modular depth within a semi-fixed structure, so patches are built by combining and routing modules rather than by choosing from a preset architecture or assembling a rack from scratch. u-he's own family context is relevant — Bazille, described as a monstrous modular synthesizer, targets a more freely patchable approach, while Zebra occupies a middle ground.
The Zebra engine spans several synthesis methods in one architecture, typically including subtractive oscillators, FM oscillators, wavetable oscillators, comb and noise modules, multistage envelopes, LFOs with complex shapes, and a modulation matrix allowing any source to modulate any destination, all connected by patching that can be saved in the preset. Version 3 revises the instrument's engine and workflow, and the Zebra line has long been valued for its generality: the same instrument covers basses, pads, leads, percussion, and effects. It suits electronic music, sound design, cinematic, and experimental production, and is used extensively for film and game audio where unusual timbres are required. u-he instruments run as standalone applications and as plugins in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats on macOS and Windows, with native Apple Silicon support, and are available through official distributors including Thomann.
