TR-909 is a software drum machine and rhythm composer developed by Roland, recreating the legendary 1983 TR-909 Rhythm Composer using Roland’s Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) modeling technology. Designed to reproduce the distinctive character of the original hardware, it provides the hard-hitting kick, snappy snare, chunky hi-hats, claps, toms, rim shots, and cymbals that helped define techno, house, acid, industrial, and other electronic music styles. The original TR-909 used a hybrid architecture, combining analog circuitry for its kick, snare, clap, and tom sounds with digitally sampled cymbals, giving it its characteristic combination of punch, brightness, and aggressive rhythmic character.

The software version preserves the workflow and sound of the original while adding modern production capabilities. Its expanded TR-REC sequencer provides individual lanes for each of the 11 drum instruments, with adjustable shuffle, last-step settings, mute and solo controls, as well as per-step articulations including soft hits, nine types of flams, and three types of sub-steps. Individual instrument gain controls can be used to overdrive the modeled circuitry, while adjustable panning provides additional control over the stereo placement of each drum sound. The sequencer includes eight pattern variations and supports drag-and-drop export of both MIDI and audio patterns directly into a DAW. TR-909 operates with up to 11 voices of polyphony and supports sampling rates from 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz. It is available in VST 3.7, AU, and AAX formats for Windows 10 64-bit and macOS 11 or later, with native Apple Silicon support. The plugin also integrates with Roland’s TR-8S Rhythm Performer and TR-09 Roland Boutique hardware for pattern transfer and hands-on control.
