TAPED: Sonic Wastelands is one of the individual instruments within the KLANG TAPED branch of the KLANG series — a series of virtual instruments made by a Cologne-based team of musicians, composers, and sound designers, whose instruments cover a wide range of approaches, including previously unpublished instruments, unusual sound experiments, and random products while trying to emerge new sounds. Where its siblings in the branch — TAPED: Reversed & Hiss Piano, TAPED: Swayed Keys, TAPED: Taped Flute, and TAPED: Spiel Uher — work with recognisable instruments passed through tape, Sonic Wastelands moves into degraded, desolate territory: the name describes material that has been pushed past conventional tape softness into something harsher and less identifiable. That positioning matters for the catalogue because it changes what the instrument is for. A tape-processed piano library is a musical instrument that happens to sound vintage; a "wastelands" library is closer to a sound design tool, and its likely use is atmospheric beds, dissonant textures, and harsh or damaged material for scoring and experimental work rather than melodic playing. The TAPED branch's medium defines the character in either case: tape softens high frequencies, compresses transients, adds low-end weight, introduces wow and flutter, and adds hiss, and pushing those effects further produces the degraded result the title describes. The series' practical details are consistent: KLANG instruments require the Kontakt full version, with Kontakt full version 5.6.8 or higher documented for the series, and titles priced around $6 each — with TAPED: Sonic Wastelands listed alongside KLANG TAPED at $6.00. The developer is Cinematique Instruments. Libraries in this series are standard open-format Kontakt libraries, so a full Kontakt licence is required and the free Kontakt Player does not support them. It suits film, television, and game scoring, sound design, and experimental electronic production.
