Steinberg FM Lab is an FM and virtual analog synthesizer instrument designed for creating classic digital tones and modern electronic sounds. Its eight-operator FM synthesis engine combines with virtual analog synthesis to produce everything from bells, electric keys, and metallic percussion to deep basses, expressive leads, evolving pads, and experimental textures. The Algorithm Designer lets users create custom operator-routing structures, while the Algorithm Finder provides access to established configurations inspired by the Yamaha DX7, TX81Z, and FM-X synthesis systems. FM Lab also supports DX7 and TX81Z SYX file import, making it possible to bring compatible classic FM patches into its modern sound-design environment.

FM Lab features freely drawable multi-stage envelopes for shaping pitch, filter, and amplitude, alongside extensive modulation sources and a powerful 32-step arpeggiator for creating rhythmic patterns and animated sequences. Its integrated effects section offers multiple processing options for refining and enhancing sounds, while the factory preset library provides starting points for sound design and performance. The instrument is suitable for hip-hop, trap, R&B, electronic music, cinematic scoring, and experimental production. FM Lab requires HALion 7 or HALion Sonic 7 and supports VST3 and AAX on compatible Windows systems, with VST3, AU, and AAX support on compatible macOS systems.
