About Speldosa
Speldosa is a virtual music box instrument — a recreation of the mechanical music box whose delicate, pin-triggered comb tones appear in lullabies, film scores, and unsettling juxtapositions across horror and thriller scoring. The instrument's character comes almost entirely from its imperfections: the comb teeth are tuned only approximately, the mechanism produces an audible whirr and click, and repeated notes never sound identical, which is why a good recreation depends on capturing mechanical noise alongside the pitched content.
Klevgrand's Speldosa is documented as a virtual instrument that recreates the sound of a music box, with all its mechanical noises and the characteristic sound of the comb. Dedicated music-box instruments typically expose controls over the speed of the mechanism, the amount of mechanical noise, the number of times the comb repeats during a note, and the pitch drift, all of which shape whether the result reads as nostalgic or disquieting. It suits film and television scoring, ambient, indie, and lo-fi production, and is a natural fit for horror, thriller, and dream-sequence work. It runs on macOS and Windows in AU, VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone formats, and — like Klevgrand's other instruments — may also be available as an AUv3 iPad app. Confirm the developer, platform list, and current version on the product page, since several developers publish instruments under this name.
