About Soul Drums
Soul Drums is presented as modern sound, vintage soul, described as an antithesis to the clean and clinical, and documented as echoing the greats of Motown with an old-meets-new foray, fusing the best of vintage and modern hardware and techniques with a forward-thinking design to create a drum instrument larger than the sum of its parts and unlike any other. The Motown reference is specific and technically meaningful: the Motown drum sound came from recording in a converted garage studio with the drums miked sparingly and heavily processed through valve equipment and a distinctive limiting chain, producing a dry, warm, heavily compressed sound in which bleed between microphones was an audible part of the character rather than a problem to be removed — and UVI's decision to model that bleed is what makes this a Motown-derived instrument rather than a vintage-sounding drum library.
Its technical specifications are documented and the microphone count is the headline: 14 mixable mics and a fully-customizable bleed matrix, along with effects, multi-out, an expansive selection of hand-crafted kits and patterns, and an intuitive interface organised across 11 pages, with a global Mix page, editors for Bass, Snare, Hi Hats, Toms, Cymbals, Percussion and Ambience, along with FX, Preferences, and the Sequencer. The customizable bleed matrix is the feature that defines the instrument, because on a real multi-mic drum recording every microphone hears some of every drum, and that crosstalk is a large part of why recorded drums sound like a kit in a room rather than a collection of samples — letting a producer dial that bleed deliberately is a capability few drum instruments offer, and it is the reason the "larger than the sum of its parts" claim is defensible. Its sampling depth is documented: up to 9 velocity layers and 6 round robins, with numerous ways to augment it — from changing drum models and exciters to play modes — where "exciters" refers to swapping the beater or mallet used to strike a drum, which changes a drum's attack character substantially and is the sampled counterpart to BFD's multiple beater types. Its performance content is documented: hundreds of hand-crafted kits and sequences available to explore, with kits and sequences browsable together or discretely, and if you want to further develop or customise the patterns they can be easily drag-n-dropped to your DAW as MIDI, plus over 1000 built-in patterns — the MIDI drag-and-drop export being what makes the pattern library usable in a real arrangement rather than only inside the plugin. Its articulations include sticks and brushes, and one documented user assessment explains the instrument's musical position well: it's got a wide range of drums, aimed at the softer side mostly. Seems like it's fairly deep sampled, and lots of mic positions etc. Has sticks and brushes articulations. That "aimed at the softer side" observation should be carried in the catalogue, since a producer expecting a hard-hitting modern rock kit would be choosing the wrong instrument — Soul Drums is for soul, Motown, and softer dynamic playing, which is a specific and legitimate position rather than a shortcoming. It is priced at $149, with a documented $99 introductory price, and published by UVI. One honest caveat from user discussion is worth noting for catalogue balance: at least one user reports CPU spikes running it on an M1 MacBook Pro at 96 kHz with a 128-sample buffer in Ableton, describing it as the only plugin they own with that issue — a specific configuration-dependent report rather than a general defect, but worth mentioning if your catalogue includes performance notes. It suits soul, Motown-style pop, R&B, funk, indie, and jazz production, and its value relative to other drum libraries is the bleed matrix combined with the softer dynamic range — there is no other mainstream drum instrument that approaches microphone bleed as a creative control.
