About Solina
Solina is a recreation of the Solina String Ensemble (also sold as the ARP String Ensemble) — the string machine whose lush, shimmering, and slightly synthetic string sound became a defining texture of 1970s pop, disco, and film music. The instrument was not a synthesizer in the conventional sense: it was a polyphonic ensemble keyboard built on a divider circuit from a single master oscillator, which is why its octave-related voices and famous bucket-brigade chorus/ensemble effect produce the characteristic sound — wide, warm, and unmistakably of its era, but not an orchestral string section.
Recreations target that specific signal path: the divider-derived tone generation, the three-phase ensemble chorus, and the characteristically soft, non-aggressive envelope with no filter section of note. The result is immediately recognizable in disco, pop, soft rock, ambient, and film score contexts, and remains a staple of synthwave, indie, and electronic production where a vintage string bed is wanted. It works equally well layered under a pad or on its own as a lead texture. The instrument runs on macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats, with NKS support if published by Arturia or a comparable developer. Confirm the developer and platform specifications before publishing, since the Solina has been modelled by several companies, and the specific versions differ in the added features — typically an upgraded ensemble effect, additional LFO waveforms, tempo sync, and an arpeggiator.
