About Solids Chromaphone 3 Sound Bank

Solids Chromaphone 3 Sound Bank is a sound pack for Applied Acoustics Systems' Chromaphone 3, the acoustic object synthesizer whose method is documented in detail: Chromaphone is entirely based on Applied Acoustics Systems (AAS) physical modeling technology and uses no sampling nor wave tables. Sound is produced by solving, on the fly, mathematical equations modeling the different types of resonators and how they interact. The engine showcases eight physically modeled acoustic resonators, where you can mix and match strings, plates, drumheads, membranes, beams, bars, and tubes to reproduce real-life instruments or create original ones, in a two-voice architecture with the amount of coupling between the two resonators controlled with the help of the Balance slider.

The name "Solids" points at a specific subset of resonator behaviour: the resonator types in Chromaphone correspond physically to different objects — bars and beams are solids, plates and membranes are surfaces, strings are one-dimensional — and a sound pack named for solids would concentrate on the bar, beam, and tube resonator families, producing marimba-, glockenspiel-, and struck-metal-adjacent tones rather than string- or drumhead-derived sounds. That distinction matters because a Chromaphone sound pack is not merely a set of patches — it selects which resonators the patches use, and therefore what physical material the instrument sounds like.

Sound packs in the AAS range are documented as usable in two ways: you can obviously play and edit the sounds in Chromaphone 3, but you can also access and play them via the free AAS Player plug-in included with your purchase — so a buyer can use the pack without owning the full instrument. Packs are priced at $19, with a Chromaphone 3 +PACKS bundle at $399 including the synthesizer, factory library, and 22 expansion sound packs, and the instrument alone at $199. Version 3 additions include Scala scale file format support and reference note frequency tuning for microtonal music making and compatibility with Chromaphone 2 sounds. The physical-modelling approach brings documented benefits: sound manipulation at the source core, presets loading in a flash, super smooth dynamics with no velocity layers, a small memory footprint of less than 256 MB of RAM per instance, and installation in less than a minute. The developer, founded in 1998, is having released Tassman, the first virtual instrument based on physical modeling, and having come to be recognized as the industry leader in this exciting new field of synthesis. It suits film and television scoring, percussion design, experimental electronic production, and sound design. Confirm the exact preset count and contents on the product page.
