That last remark is an honest statement of the design problem — the slap bass sound became a cliché through overuse in 1980s and 1990s production, and a modern instrument has to deliver the technique without the period baggage, which is what the "modern" framing addresses. Its contents are documented: 30 styles with over 350 individual phrases, both slap and fingerstyle playing techniques, more than 100 presets and 30 Finisher multi-effect modes, MIDI drag and drop, and a resizable user interface. Its signal path is documented in detail and is unusual for a Virtual Bassist: Virtual Bassist SLAP features a Fuzz distortion stage. It adds significant harmonic and character to the bass sound before it enters the pre-amp of the Amp setup, and it features a bass channel with a Finisher section and three audio processors dedicated for exactly this type of bass sound — a Compressor, an Equalizer, and an Octaver — the octaver being the processor that makes slap playing usable in a mix, since the technique's upper-register pops need reinforcement from a sub layer.
