Refraction is a Sonora Cinematic release, and the developer describes itself as a home for the sample libraries produced by composer and sound designer — with Refraction marketed under the line a piano VST actually unlike any other. The name describes the technique: refraction is the bending of a wave as it passes between media, and in a prepared-piano context it points at a piano whose sound has been altered by processing, unconventional playing, or physical preparation so that it no longer behaves like a normal piano. Instruments in this register typically supply multi-sampled piano material captured with unusual techniques — bowed strings, prepared dampers, close-miked effects, and processed resonances — alongside playable conventional notes and designed textures built from the same source. They suit film, television, and game scoring, ambient production, and contemporary composition, and are used where a piano is wanted as a texture or a timbral element rather than an accompaniment instrument. Because the developer is an independent label rather than one of the large houses, the likely delivery is a Kontakt library requiring the full retail version of Kontakt — since standard open-format Kontakt libraries cannot be used in the free Kontakt Player — or a plugin instrument on macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats. It is a natural catalogue companion to Soundiron's prepared and experimental piano work and to KLANG's treatment-based instruments, and worth grouping with them under an experimental-piano heading. Confirm the delivery format, required host, and contents on the developer's product page, since independent libraries in this register vary in whether they ship as Kontakt instruments or as plugins, and the specific instrument sampled and its sizing should be verified before publishing. #Refraction #SonoraCinematic #Piano #PreparedPiano #Experimental #SoundDesign #FilmScore #Television #GameAudio #Ambient #ContemporaryComposition #Kontakt #FullKontaktRequired #MusicProduction #VST #VST3 #AU #AAX #Standalone #FLStudio #AbletonLive #LogicPro #Cubase #Reaper
