About Prophecy
Prophecy refers to Korg's software recreation of the Prophecy, and the original's history explains the instrument's significance: the Korg Prophecy, released in 1995, was a monophonic solo synthesizer built on Korg's MOSS (Multiple Oscillator Synthesis System) engine, which combined analogue modelling with physical modelling, FM, and VPM synthesis types — and it was the instrument that introduced physical modelling to a mass market, arriving at the same moment as Yamaha's VL1 and before Korg expanded MOSS into the polyphonic Z1. Its design assumption was a solo instrument played one note at a time, with a ribbon controller and a substantial real-time modulation set — which is why it was adopted by players working in the register that needed expressive lead sounds rather than chordal pads.
That history is the reason the instrument appears in a catalogue, and it also dictates what the software version must deliver. Because the MOSS engine's value is in the variety of synthesis methods it exposes rather than in any single one, a faithful recreation needs the analogue-modelled analogue waveforms, the physical-modelling plucked and blown types, the FM and VPM types, and the modelled filters and effects, plus the modulation routing that makes the instrument respond to playing. Korg's approach across its software range follows a documented pattern that applies here: its instruments are proudly digitized using KORG's Component Modeling Technology (CMT), with high-resolution interfaces for Retina and 4K, and KORG Collection titles are updated to new versions with existing owners receiving the update free — as documented for Mono/Poly V2, where users who already have the plugins from the KORG Collection series can update to version 2 for free. The catalogue should state which KORG Collection release this is and whether an upgrade path exists, since Korg ships these recreations individually and within the collection, and an owner considering the purchase needs to know which licence they already hold. Named comparators in the collection include the Mono/Poly, documented as offering faithful modeling of the Mono/Poly circuitry, 8-way virtual patches, 2 multi effects, and 300 up-to-date presets with 159 modulation sources and 35 destinations; and multi/poly native, the fully-compatible software counterpart to the hardware multi/poly synthesizer. It suits electronic music, techno, ambient, film and game scoring, and expressive solo performance, and the physical-modelling content is the reason to choose it over an analogue-modelling synth — a MOSS recreation produces blown, plucked, and struck timbres that no subtractive design can reach.
