Neurofunk Serum is a preset collection for Xfer Records' Serum aimed at neurofunk — the drum & bass subgenre that emerged in the late 1990s through producers including Ed Rush, Optical, and Matrix, and whose defining characteristic is a bass sound designed rather than played. The technical distinction matters for a catalogue: where a jump-up or liquid bass is a patch, a neurofunk bass is typically a resampled artefact — sound designers generate a short bass sound, resample it, process it further, and resample again, accumulating complexity that a single synthesis pass cannot produce — and Serum's position in that workflow is as the generator and modulator at the front of the chain, since its wavetable oscillators, freely routable LFOs and envelopes, and multiple filter models produce the heavily modulated raw material that neurofunk producers then resample. What patches for the genre look like: phaser and comb-filtered basses, FM and ring-modulated timbres, formant-based growls, and complex modulated textures, alongside tight, processed breakbeat-ready drum content and the sharp transient design the genre uses in its snares. Packs in this territory are documented across the market — the standalone's TALES Melodic Techno pack, as a comparator, ships 110 presets plus 25 MIDI files and an Ableton project, while the Teknovault melodic techno pack contains 335 files including 140 presets and 140 preset renders — demonstrating that the category weighting and the inclusion of rendered audio for auditioning vary by publisher and are worth checking. Loopmasters' Patchworx series, closer to this territory, ships 64 custom presets, 64 MIDI files, and 64 WAV rendered versions per pack, as in Icicle Drum & Bass – Massive Presets — produced by a working drum & bass producer, which matters in neurofunk specifically, since the genre's sound design conventions are exacting. A requirement applies and should be stated: Xfer Records Serum is required, with presets placed via the Menu tab and the "Show Serum Presets folder" option. It suits neurofunk, drum & bass, techstep, and sound design. Presets run inside the host on macOS and Windows wherever Serum runs.
