Microwave 1 Version 2 is the second-generation plugin version of Waldorf's Microwave — the synthesizer that, as Waldorf states, defined hybrid synthesis at its best with its unique interpretation of wavetable synthesis combined with analogue filters. That combination is the instrument's historical importance: the Microwave paired digital wavetables with genuine analogue filters, and its wavetables were produced by the PPG Wave lineage, which is why its sound is not reproducible by a purely digital wavetable synth. The fidelity of the recreation is documented in unusually concrete terms: the Waldorf Microwave 1 Plugin was painstakingly recreated from the original hardware with all its idiosyncrasies and wonderful singularities. A multi-year effort and a labor of love which analyzed and modeled the original instruments down to the finest sonic details of every aspect of the hardware. Two specifics are worth stating: as the original, the plug-in runs the internal synthesis with the ultra-high sampling rate of 250 kHz regardless of the DAW sampling rate, and the recreated digital waveforms have been bit-by-bit compared with the original to be 100% identical. The plugin also allows for artificially detuning and recalibrating of the analogue components, and Waldorf notes that brutal attacks, snappy decays, and a plethora of wonderful transients define the sound of the first generation Microwave. Version 2's additions are documented: additional voice cards, increasing original polyphony from 8 to 32 while keeping micro timing and variations, multi modes like Round Robin and Random Robin, a polyphonic arpeggiator for each instrument part, a global arpeggiator including round robin modes, and a creative delay effect including filter, tremolo, diffusion, and pitch shifting, plus all features from v1.3.0.
