About Medieval Phrases: Lute & Theorbo
Medieval Phrases: Lute & Theorbo is documented as sounds of knights and taverns, and the developer's framing sets the scene: our first phrase library focusing on plucked instruments, Medieval Phrases Lute & Theorbo brings you into a world of classic imagination, booming with bards and taverns, questing knights, and roving robber barons and bandits, bringing back that flair of medieval castles and the inspiring spirit of the Renaissance, transporting you to rustic pubs and medieval markets, from Homer's epics to the court of the Medicis. A detail from the developer's own release notes adds useful honesty: until we recorded this Lute & Theorbo library, all our previous products had been more lyrical and free. With this latest library, we had to go in a different direction: plucked instruments — and working with Attila, we quickly learned that the best way to approach Medieval instrumentation was to pay attention to the modes that were more common during the period. That's why we settled on approaching this library with phrases in the Dorian and Natural Minor modes. The modal decision is the detail that gives the library its authenticity, since a phrase in a modern major key played on a lute reads as pastiche rather than as period music.
Its contents and system are documented: 10 lute and 5 theorbo themes, with each theme consisting of five complete phrases where you can play the opening, middle and endings of each phrase and combine them freely to create new phrases, plus short endings that will take you back to the root at any time. That phrase-builder architecture is Sonuscore's signature and the reason these libraries are playable rather than merely loop-based — you are not choosing among fixed recordings but assembling a performance from parts, which is what makes tempo-synced phrase libraries usable in a real composition. Further documented features: syncs to DAW's tempo, fully playable rhythmic phrases, lute playable in arps and chords, and also playable freely as single instruments. Its effects are a full complement of contemporary FX, such as reverb, delay, and a 4-band equalizer. One caveat worth carrying comes from a user discussion: in my (subjective) opinion, the Sonuscore library is useful mostly for the phrases. The two playable instruments are a bit colorless and lacking in medieval vibe — and, illuminatingly, despite Sonuscore's labeling, the lute and theorbo are Renaissance instruments, not from the middle ages. The catalogue should lead with the phrase system rather than the free-play instruments, since that is what the library does well, and the naming caveat is worth noting honestly for accuracy. Requirements are documented and are the key compatibility point: this product requires a FULL version of Native Instruments' Kontakt — or Steinberg's FREE HALion Sonic — with the Kontakt requirement stated elsewhere as full version of NI Kontakt 6.7.1 or later, and it will not work in the free Kontakt Player. Its size is documented variously as 2.5 GB and a 1.51 GB download, and it is priced at $99.99 direct, or $49.99 through some distributors, with a 100% rating documented. Its sibling is Medieval Phrases Fiddle & Nyckelharpa, documented as 8 Fiddle and 7 Nyckelharpa themes with over 600 total phrases, syncs to DAW tempo, fully playable rhythmic phrases, and also playable freely as single instruments, featuring Izsák Farkas on electric violin expressions and Thomas Roth, acclaimed as the world's top Nyckelharpa player, where the nyckelharpa — literally a "key fiddle" — is a traditional Swedish bowed instrument with 16 strings, of which four are played with a bow and the rest are sympathetic strings that resonate with the bowed ones. It suits film, television, and game scoring, period and historical drama, fantasy productions, and folk and bardcore music, and the developer's own creative director notes that these instruments are by no means limited to the Middle Ages or Renaissance, and they're fantastic for any fantasy or historical scenario.
