About M-Tron Pro IV
M-Tron Pro IV is described as the best Mellotron M400 library in the digital realm, and GForce's M-Tron Pro IV delves into the iconic Mellotron M400, a tape-based keyboard famous for its use in recordings by renowned artists like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Oasis, Trent Reznor, Trentemøller, AIR, Nils Frahm, and many others. The instrument's lineage matters to the description: the Mellotron M400 was the most successful of the tape-replay keyboards, with each key triggering a length of magnetic tape carrying a pre-recorded performance, and that mechanical method is audible in the sound — a slight swell as the tape reaches speed, pitch drift as it plays, mechanical transport noise, and a hard stop when the tape ends. GForce's standing in this area is documented: M-Tron Pro has gained significant acclaim as the finest software emulation of the Mellotron, appreciated by both top producers and avid Mellotron enthusiasts, and Sound On Sound's review summarised it as probably the leading Mellotron soft synth, now much improved and even more encompassing than before at £179.99 including VAT.
Two editions are documented and the difference should lead the catalogue entry. M-Tron Pro IV carries an extensive 3.5GB sound library including over 200 tape banks and 800+ presets, listed at $149.99. M-Tron Pro IV – Complete, described as the ultimate collection of 'Tron sounds bundled with the M-Tron Pro, adds 560+ tape banks (sample sets), 4000+ patches including many curated by world-class recording artists and programmers, and 15GB of samples, with a huge range of Expansion Packs and a total value of £824.83+VAT, including Lament by Venus Theory and all the expansion packs, at $449.99. The version's new features are documented: a completely revamped and significantly enhanced version of their beloved instrument, with a fully-scalable UI and a redesigned interface that enables effortless and efficient sound customisation — and one feature drew particular attention from users: for me, the most important feature besides the improved browser is Rewind. M-Tron Pro IV is the only Mellotron plugin that mimics the way a real Mellotron works when you release a key and quickly press it again. Every other plugin restarts the sample at the very beginning instead of near the release point. That detail is a genuine differentiator worth carrying in the catalogue, since it reproduces a behaviour of the physical instrument that affects how it feels to play.
Requirements are documented per platform. Mac: standalone application, AudioUnit, AAX, VST2, VST3, Intel and Apple Silicon native, macOS 10.13 or above. PC: standalone application, AAX, VST2, VST3, 2 GHz CPU with 2 GB RAM, Windows 7 and above. Expansion packs are sold individually, including The Streetly Tapes – London library at $49.99, Dust-O-Tron Artist Expansion by Sound Dust at $49.99, and M-Tron Pro IV – Lament by Venus Theory at $12.49. It suits progressive rock, psychedelia, indie, ambient, film and television scoring, and pop, and the instrument's place in the catalogue rests on being the most complete Mellotron emulation available, with the Complete edition's 560+ tape banks covering far more than the factory set.
