The instrument is built from recordings of a modern upright piano processed using vintage analog tape machines, tape loops, cassette echoes, and magnetic card readers. It is tailored specifically for lo-fi hip-hop, ambient soundscapes, cinematic scoring, and indie pop tracks requiring organic analog wobble and texture.

The plugin features sound-shaping controls—including a dynamic Variation slider—allowing you to shift seamlessly from smooth, warm flutter to gritty, degraded tape pitch shifts. LABS Tape Piano is 100% free and operates inside Spitfire Audio's dedicated player plugin in 64-bit VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats (as well as a standalone application) for both Windows (10/11) and macOS (11/12+ with full Intel and Apple Silicon support).
