InPhase is Waves' phase alignment tool, built to correct the timing relationship between tracks — a problem that arises whenever a source is captured by multiple microphones at different distances, or when parallel processing introduces a delay. When tracks are out of phase, the result is comb filtering, weakened low end, and a loss of punch that no amount of EQ fixes, because the cancellation is happening in the time domain rather than the frequency domain. Its value is most obvious on multi-mic drum recordings — where the relationship between close mics and overheads determines whether the kit sounds cohesive or hollow — and on bass and DI/amp combinations, and it is equally useful for aligning parallel compression or layered synth parts.
