About Hopkin Instrumentarium: The U
Hopkin Instrumentarium: The U is described by Soundiron with the construction detail that explains the instrument completely: The U is a glissy steel lamellophone created by master instrument inventor Bart Hopkin. Rather than having one tine per note, this creation has 14 closely spaced tines per note. Each group of tines is tuned in octaves and fifths across a range of three or four octaves. That architecture produces a sound unlike a conventional thumb piano: striking one "note" excites fourteen tines tuned to harmonically related intervals, so each note arrives as a chord with a slight glissando as the tines ring in sequence — which is where the "glissy" description comes from.
The instrument's making is documented: the tines are made of narrow stainless steel machine screws, tuned by adjusting the length using the hex nuts at the base. In addition, most of the screws are overtone-tuned by means of additional hex nuts serving as adjustable weights along the length. That is a genuinely unusual design — overtones tuned by placing mass along the vibrating element — and it is the mechanism behind the instrument's characteristic resonance. A reviewer's framing is useful: if your definition of world instruments leans on rare and unusual, then there's no — the quote trails off, but the point stands, and Bart Hopkin is a genuinely significant figure in experimental instrument design, having published and built widely in the field.
Hopkin Instrumentarium is a Soundiron collection, and the Lamellophones bundle includes all of our unique Hopkin Instrumentarium plucked idiophone libraries, plus two new exclusive instruments: Cat's Face and CÍque. It offers over 100 custom FX presets for instant inspiration, at $199, with Hopkin Instrumentarium: Lamellophones offered as a Kontakt Player / NKS title while some individual entries are Kontakt Full Version. Sibling instruments include Hopkin Instrumentarium: Icicles & Pop Ice at $39, Hopkin Instrumentarium: Handsome Dan, and Hopkin Instrumentarium: Flat Gongs at $39 regular, $29 on sale. As with the series generally, this library comes with an adaptable LFO system, with selectable LFO shape, modulation target parameter, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing, and fade-in time, and — where the entry is a full-Kontakt library — the full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt version 6.2.2 or higher is required to use .nki instrument presets, since the free Kontakt "Player" and "Add Library" import process do not support this standard open-format Kontakt library. It suits film and television scoring, ambient and experimental production, and sound design. Confirm whether your catalogue's entry is the standalone instrument, the Lamellophones bundle, or a Kontakt Player versus full-Kontakt version.
