Hive 2 Expansion Pack: Synthwave adds a synthwave-oriented library to u-he's Hive 2, a wavetable synthesizer designed for fast, low-CPU operation with a streamlined workflow. Hive is unusual among wavetable synths for its emphasis on efficiency: it is designed to be light on CPU, which makes it practical for layering many instances in a dense production — exactly what synthwave arrangement involves, with multiple pad, bass, and lead layers stacked under gated drums.

Synthwave expansions supply the genre's characteristic palette: thick analog-style basses, chorused electric piano and FM-adjacent keys, soaring supersaw leads, warm analog pads, driving arpeggios, and retro-futuristic effects. They typically make use of Hive's wavetables, its modulation matrix, and its built-in effects including chorus, delay, and reverb, and often include assigned macros so the essential movement can be performed rather than programmed. An expansion requires a licensed copy of u-he Hive 2, and presets run inside the host on macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats. It suits synthwave, retrowave, outrun, electronic pop, and 80s-influenced production. Confirm the publisher, preset count, and required Hive version on the product page, since Hive expansions come from several third-party sound design houses.
