Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor Compressor is a software recreation of the classic EL8 hardware compressor developed by Universal Audio in collaboration with Empirical Labs. It reproduces the original's fast compression response, distinctive compression curves, and versatile character, making it suitable for vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths, room mics, and mix buses. Its range extends from subtle dynamic control and warming to aggressive compression and limiting.

The plugin includes multiple compression ratios from 1:1 through 20:1 plus the Nuke setting, along with Dist 2 and Dist 3 modes for adding harmonic saturation. Detector sidechain filtering and Band Emphasis provide additional control over how the compressor responds to incoming signals, while Dry/Wet mixing and Headroom controls add flexibility beyond the original hardware. The current UAD Native version runs on Windows and macOS, while the DSP version is available for compatible UAD hardware and Apollo interfaces.
