DrumX is a short product name that several publishers use for drum instruments, so the most useful thing a catalogue entry can do is establish which product it names and describe the instrument class accurately. The territory is well documented by close comparators. Rob Papen's Punch-2 is a virtual drum synthesizer where by adding even more drum synthesis models and introducing a totally new main screen which allows you to quickly create new drum kits, Punch-2 continues its legacy to be a cutting edge drum machine, and where you can map out REX files or sample slices to individual pads and combine these creatively with the sounds and pattern sequencer found inside Punch-2, with further editing of REX files or sliced pads using filters, envelopes, and routing into one of the 4 FX modules, plus a full new Master section with EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Stereo/mono split filter, and layout mixer. Unfiltered Audio's Battalion occupies the same register, described as an explosive drum machine that marries the depth of software with the performative fun of hardware, combining over twenty types of drum synthesis engines, including FM, Additive, Modal, and VOSIM with four sample manipulation engines and an 8-voice architecture.

Instruments in this class typically provide multiple drum synthesis engines covering analog-style, FM, and physical-modelling approaches, sample playback alongside synthesis, a step sequencer with probability and swing controls, per-voice filtering and envelopes, an effects section, and kit and preset management. They suit electronic music, techno, hip hop, and sound design, and are used both for programming parts and for designing signature drums. Requirements depend on the specific product: a plugin instrument on macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats, sometimes with an iPad edition as in Battalion's case.
