About Chromaphone 3
Chromaphone 3 is described as an acoustic object synthesizer, and the developer's explanation of the method is worth carrying into the catalogue: Chromaphone is entirely based on Applied Acoustics Systems (AAS) physical modeling technology and uses no sampling nor wave tables. Sound is produced by solving, on the fly, mathematical equations modeling the different types of resonators and how they interact. This elaborate synthesis engine responds to playing in continuous ways rather than through recorded layers.
Its architecture is specific: Chromaphone 3 is a two-voice eight-physically-modeled-acoustic-resonator synthesizer with advanced editing capabilities that produce a delightful mixture of real-life presence and distinctive timbres that can't be found anywhere else, and it shows eight physically modeled acoustic resonators. Mix and match strings, plates, drumheads, membranes, beams, bars, and tubes to reproduce real-life instruments or create original ones. The design principle is resonators are the heart of object synthesis, and the amount of coupling between the two resonators is controlled with the help of the Balance slider, where the modeling of these complex interactions results in tones and timbres that reproduce the richness of sounds from real acoustic instruments.
Version 3's additions include support for the Scala scale file format as well as reference note frequency tuning for microtonal music making, compatibility with Chromaphone 2 sounds — simply copy Chromaphone 2 banks in Chromaphone 3's packs folder to convert them — and an expanded multi-effects module. The physical modelling approach brings documented practicality: sound manipulation at the source core, presets loading in a flash, super smooth dynamics with no velocity layers, a small memory footprint of less than 256 MB of RAM per instance, and installation in less than a minute. It costs $199 standalone, with a Chromaphone 3 +PACKS bundle at $399 including 22 expansion sound packs, and a Chromaphone 3 Upgrade for Chromaphone 1 and 2 users available separately. Sound packs can be purchased individually and played via our free AAS Player. It suits sound design, film and game scoring, experimental electronic music, and percussion design.
