BFD Orchestral is a BFD3 expansion bringing orchestral percussion into the BFD environment — the family of timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, glockenspiel, xylophone, marimba, crotales, and an array of auxiliary percussion used in film, television, game, and concert scoring. Its value within BFD is that it lets orchestral percussion share the same engine, microphone setup, and processing as the acoustic kits, so a score's percussion can be mixed and treated consistently rather than sitting in a separate instrument.

Content of this type typically includes timpani with multiple mallets and tunings, orchestral bass drum and snare with the appropriate articulations, tuned percussion across the standard ranges, and presets oriented toward scoring contexts, along with groove material for percussion passages. It suits film, television, and game scoring, trailer music, and contemporary production that uses orchestral percussion as a rhythmic element. Requirements for BFD3 expansions are BFD 3.5 License Required on Windows 10 version 1909 and above or macOS 12 Monterey and above, with 8 GB DDR3 RAM and above and AMD Ryzen 3 (2017) and above or Apple Silicon M1 and above, plus an internet connection to authorize, and supported formats are VST2, VST3, and AAX on Windows and VST2, VST3, AAX, and AU (Intel and ARM — Rosetta is not required) on Mac. Note that BFD expansions require BFD 3.5 and are not compatible with BFD Player expansions. Comparable material within the BFD catalogue includes BFD Swan Percussion, a collection of innovative percussion and effect cymbal sounds from around the world.
