Waves Abbey Road J37 Tape is a precision model of the Studer J37 tape machine used at Abbey Road Studios during the 1960s and 1970s. The plugin recreates the original machine's tape saturation, harmonic distortion, frequency response, and analog imperfections, making it useful for adding warmth and character to vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths, and complete mixes. It includes three modeled EMI oxide tape formulas, each with its own tonal response and distortion characteristics.

The plugin provides controls for Tape Speed, Bias, Saturation, Noise, Wow, and Flutter, allowing producers to move from subtle analog coloration to more pronounced vintage tape effects. It also recreates the behavior of the J37's modeled tape tracks and includes tape delay functionality for additional rhythmic and spatial effects. The J37 is particularly suited to vintage, lo-fi, rock, soul, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic production, while still being useful for subtle mix-bus coloration.
