Applied Acoustics Systems Chromaphone 3 is an acoustic object synthesizer built around physical modeling rather than conventional sample playback or wavetable synthesis. Its sound engine combines eight types of physically modeled resonators—including strings, beams, marimba bars, plates, drumheads, membranes, and open and closed tubes—to produce everything from realistic acoustic instruments to synthetic, metallic, and percussive textures. Two resonators can operate in parallel or in coupled mode, allowing energy to move between them and create more complex, organic timbres. The instrument also supports two independent sound layers that can be stacked or split across the keyboard.

Chromaphone 3 includes over 1,000 presets, a built-in arpeggiator, step sequencer, four performance macros per layer, and an expanded multi-effects section featuring reverb, delay, distortion, chorus, flanger, phaser, filtering, compression, tremolo, and guitar amplification. Its sound browser organizes presets by category, pack, and creator, while microtonal tuning support through Scala files enables alternative tuning systems. Chromaphone 3 is suited to cinematic sound design, electronic music, hip-hop melodies, mallet instruments, bells, plucks, basses, pads, and experimental percussion. It supports VST2, VST3, AU, AAX Native, NKS, and standalone operation on compatible Windows and macOS systems.
