Truth About Spotify's and Why Independent Artist Can't Win
I stopped uploading my music to Spotify six months ago. Not because of streaming payouts—though those are terrible—but because of the features they gatekeep from independent artists.
The Problems Nobody Talks About
Spotify Clips is a great way for artists to connect with fans. Except if you're in Africa. Or most of the developing world. The feature just isn't available. No explanation, no timeline. You're region-locked out before you even start.
Merch integration lets established artists sell hoodies and vinyl directly on their profiles. But if you don't have a certain threshold of monthly listeners, you can't access it. The artists who need merch income most can't use the tool.
The algorithm amplifies what's already popular. Your track could be incredible, but without initial velocity, you're buried under Discover Weekly playlists that prioritize major label releases.
I got tired of complaining. So I built [FeelzMachine](https://feelzmachine.com).
What's Different
Discovery is artist-curated. Follow producers, beatmakers, and singers. They share tracks they believe in—not what an AI thinks you'll tolerate.
Your profile is your website. Upload music, sell merch, link socials, embed YouTube. Everything in one place. No gatekeeping based on follower count.
Collaboration splits are automatic. Work with two producers and a vocalist? Everyone gets paid instantly based on percentages you set upfront. No invoices, no waiting.
Streaming has no ads. Fans purchase directly from artists they follow. We take 0% of music sales.
Still Early, But Growing
We're two months old with 46 artists. Small compared to Spotify, obviously. But last week I discovered a South African producer on the platform and upgraded him to Premium. Not because an algorithm told me to but because his music was good.
That's the whole point.
I'm not saying FeelzMachine is perfect. There are bugs. Features I'm still building. But at least I'm not pretending the system is fair when it's not.
Let that sink in...
